Receiving Energy is More Important Than Issuing Energy

Receiving Energy is More Important Than

 Issuing Energy

  • Even Reception: When pushed on the arms, the force should be distributed evenly across both arms and then grounded through the body into the feet. There shouldn't be a dominant pushing or pulling force.

  • Extension and Expansion: After receiving the force completely, the arms should extend outwards like a spring being released. This is accompanied by an internal expansion or 'growing' sensation.

  • Sending Jing Back: This refers to projecting energy back towards the opponent, not just physically pushing, but also sending an energetic intent.

Drills to Practice

Note: These drills are designed to develop the physical and energetic aspects of the technique. For a deeper understanding and refinement, hands-on practice with a partner and guidance from a qualified teacher is essential.

Solo Drills

  1. Wall Push:

    • Stand facing a wall, arms extended comfortably.
    • Imagine a force pushing your arms.
    • Receive the imaginary force evenly, then extend and expand your arms as if pushing back against a strong resistance.
    • Focus on the sensation of rooting your feet and engaging your core as you extend.

  2. Elastic Arm Training:

    • Stand with arms relaxed at your sides.
    • Imagine your arms are elastic bands.
    • Slowly extend your arms outwards, feeling a stretching sensation.
    • Retract your arms, feeling a coiling sensation.
    • Repeat, focusing on the elasticity and rebound.

Partner Drills

  1. Gentle Pushing:

    • Stand facing a partner with arms extended.
    • Partner gently pushes on your arms, varying the pressure and direction.
    • Focus on receiving the force evenly, extending your arms, and sending a subtle push back.
  2. Sticky Hands:

    • Practice sticky hands with a partner.
    • When your partner pushes, focus on adhering to their force without resistance initially.
    • Once you feel the force, extend your arms while maintaining contact, sending your jing back.

Key Points

  • Relaxation: Maintain a relaxed body throughout the drills. Tension will hinder the energy flow.
  • Grounding: Ensure your feet are firmly rooted to provide a solid base for power generation.
  • Visualization: Imagine the energy flowing through your body and out through your arms.
  • Sensitivity: Develop sensitivity to your partner's force to respond effectively.

Remember, the goal is not just physical strength but also the cultivation of internal energy (jing). With consistent practice and mindful attention, you can develop a deeper understanding and application of this technique.
