“逢轉必沉,逢沉必領,逢起必沉,逢定必鬆” is a set of four guiding principles in Tai Chi Chuan that emphasize the importance of sinking, leading, and relaxation throughout the practice. These principles are often referred to as the "Four Encounters" or "Four Essentials" of Tai Chi Chuan.
-
逢轉必沉 (fēng zhuǎn bì chén) - Sink when turning: This principle emphasizes the importance of sinking the body's weight and center of gravity when executing turning movements in Tai Chi Chuan. As the body turns, the weight should settle into the legs and root, providing a stable base for the movement and preventing the upper body from becoming disconnected or floating.
-
逢沉必領 (fēng chén bì lǐng) - Lead when sinking: This principle highlights the importance of leading the movement with the intention and mind rather than relying solely on physical force. When sinking, the practitioner should guide the movement with their intention, allowing the body to follow naturally and smoothly.
-
逢起必沉 (fēng qǐ bì chén) - Sink when rising: This principle emphasizes maintaining a sense of rootedness and connection even during rising movements. As the body rises, the weight should not be completely lifted off the ground, but rather maintained in a low center of gravity, ensuring stability and balance.
-
逢定必鬆 (fēng dìng bì sōng) - Relax when stationary: This principle underscores the importance of maintaining relaxation even in static postures. While holding a Tai Chi Chuan pose, the muscles should not be tense or rigid, but rather relaxed and comfortable, allowing the body to align naturally and energy to flow freely.
The "Four Encounters" provide a framework for understanding and practicing Tai Chi Chuan with proper alignment, balance, and energy flow. By incorporating these principles into their practice, Tai Chi Chuan practitioners can cultivate deeper levels of relaxation, develop internal strength, and enhance their overall well-being.
These principles are not just about physical movements; they also have deeper philosophical and metaphorical meanings. Sinking represents grounding and stability, leading represents intention and guidance, rising represents expansion and connection, and relaxation represents openness and receptivity. By embodying these qualities both in their Tai Chi Chuan practice and in their daily lives, practitioners can cultivate a more harmonious and balanced existence.
