利用別人的反作用力 (Li Yong Bie Ren Fan

 Zuoyong) in Push Hands (Tuishou)

利用別人的反作用力 (Lì Yòng Bié Rén Fàn Zuò Yòng) translates to "utilizing your opponent's reactionary force." This is a fundamental concept in Tai Chi Chuan Push Hands (Tuishou) that involves feeling your partner's resistance and adapting your movement accordingly, rather than directly overpowering them.

Here's how it works:

  1. Feeling the Opponent's Force: During Tuishou, you maintain a light and sensitive connection with your partner through your palms. As they initiate a push or press, you become aware of the direction and quality of their force.
  2. Yielding and Neutralizing: Instead of resisting head-on, you soften your body slightly and yield to their incoming force. This doesn't mean giving up, but rather creating space for their energy to flow through you without being completely blocked.
  3. Following the Direction: Once you've neutralized their initial force, you can subtly redirect their energy by following the direction of their push. Imagine guiding a stream of water rather than building a dam against it.
  4. Borrowing Power: By following their reactionary force, you can leverage it to your advantage. This borrowed power can be used to gently control your partner's movement or initiate your own technique with greater efficiency.

Benefits of 利用別人的反作用力:

  • Improved Sensitivity: Develops a keen awareness of your partner's movements and intentions.
  • Enhanced Efficiency: Allows you to use minimal effort to control or redirect your opponent's force.
  • Superior Control: Enables you to subtly guide your partner's movements without resorting to brute strength.
  • Flow and Harmony: Promotes a more fluid and harmonious interaction in Tuishou.

Drills for 利用別人的反作用力 (Li Yong Bie Ren Fan Zuoyong)

Here are three drills for A and B to practice utilizing your opponent's reactionary force:

Drill 1: Single Push with Following

  1. Stand facing each other with arm's length distance in a neutral posture.
  2. A initiates a gentle forward push with one palm.
  3. B feels the push and yields slightly, allowing the force to flow through the torso.
  4. B then follows the direction of the push by subtly extending their arm and shifting weight slightly back.
  5. A feels B's response and immediately withdraws the pushing force, maintaining a light connection.
  6. Repeat by switching roles.

Drill 2: Ward Off (Peng) with Following

  1. Stand facing each other with arm's length distance.
  2. Assume a proper Ward Off (Peng) posture with one arm raised and elbow bent.
  3. A initiates a Peng movement by pressing forward with the raised arm. B should feel the incoming force.
  4. B responds by:
    • Yielding and Neutralizing: Soften the body slightly, allowing the Peng to flow through.
    • Following: B can subtly extend the blocking arm (originally raised) to meet A's press while simultaneously shifting weight back slightly to follow the direction of the force.
  5. A feels B's following response and adjusts the press accordingly, maintaining a continuous connection and flow.

Drill 3: Continuous Push Hands with Following

  1. Stand facing each other with arm's length distance in a neutral posture.
  2. A and B gently connect palms with elbows slightly bent.
  3. A initiates a small forward press.
  4. B follows the principles of yielding, neutralizing, and following the direction of the force throughout the exercise.
  5. A continues to apply a light, continuous pressure while adapting to B's responses.
  6. Both A and B focus on feeling each other's movements and maintaining a smooth, flowing connection.

Tips:

  • Maintain a relaxed and sensitive posture throughout the drills.
  • Focus on feeling your partner's intention and the quality of their force.
  • Don't resist their push directly, but rather yield and follow its direction.
  • Coordinate your breath with your movements.
  • Start slowly and gradually increase the speed and complexity as your skill improves.

By practicing these drills, you will develop a deeper understanding of 利用別人的反作用力 (Li Yong Bie Ren Fan Zuoyong) and enhance your ability to control and redirect your partner's force in Push Hands (Tuishou). Remember, Tai Chi emphasizes yielding and using minimal effort to achieve maximum results.
